My parents were delighted to hear that I would be returning to Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland to celebrate my birthday in a holiday cottage. I had spent many childhood holidays there, travelling out to the Inner and Outer Hebrides aboard the island ferries. We never called it island-hopping in those days, but in reality it was exactly that.
It wasn't a great summer this year. However on our cottage holiday in Cornwall we did manage to get to the beach, it seemed, every other day. Going on recommendations from fellow holidaymakers and locals we discovered some fantastic locations that, quite rightly, Cornwall is famous for. However it was not just the setting that that will make the day I am about to describe live on in our memories
I'm very lucky that my home overlooks Ilkley Moor. The moor is probably most famous for the song that has become the unofficial anthem of Yorkshire. It tells of a lover courting the object of his affections, Mary Jane, on Ilkley Moor without a hat (baht 'at).
When we decided to set up UK Cottages we wanted to offer a website that helps you to research an area of the UK which might be of interest to you, give you an idea of what it has to offer and then present you with a selection of quality-assured self catering holiday cottages from our trusted partners to suit your needs. Peter has worked in senior positions within the travel industry for nearly 30 years.
I was a journalist and latterly a deputy editor of a newspaper until I began to raise my family. We are both keen walkers and have the good fortune to live in the Yorkshire Dales. We both have a passion for exploring this beautiful island of ours and believe that staying in self catering holiday cottages is one of the best ways to really get to know the UK. There is so much variety in the landscape, the architecture, the customs, the food and drink and the people.
Despite increasing uniformity, we believe that you can still discover this rich diversity if you look hard enough and you will have a much more fulfilling holiday for that. Plus, we not only want to share our passion for the UK countryside with you, but want you to share thoughts and ideas with us to possibly help someone else choose the right place for their holiday cottage. Cathy.
