Here's what you can see and do when taking one of our cottage breaks in East Anglia and Lincolnshire.
The East of England is a region of big skies with wide vistas that has retained much of its unspoilt character in its many well preserved medieval towns and villages, home to fine examples of architecture - timber-framed, flint, thatch and weather-boarded buildings. With its selection of holiday cottages East Anglia is a great destination any time of the year.
The countryside is predominately a low lying and open area, containing a diversity of gentle landscapes - from flat fens to chalk downland, heathland, man-made waterways, forest and ancient woodland. For visitors to East Anglia cottages make an ideal base from which to explore this enchanting region. Towering over this land are some of Britain's finest cathedrals including Lincoln, Norwich and Ely as well as the famous university city of Cambridge.
The coastline covers over 500 miles from the Humber estuary to the wide expanse of the River Thames via The Wash, England's largest tidal estuary and a naturalists' delight. Along the coast you will found unspoilt beaches, crumbling cliffs, estuaries, shingle spits and probably Britain's best mudflats and saltmarshes. A favourite activity for those staying in holiday cottages in East Anglia is a trip to the beach and there are many popular seaside resorts offering family fun and entertainment. So, why not browse our selection of East Anglia cottages to find something that catches your eye?
Cottages in the East of England
Norfolk cottages
Cottage breaks in Norfolk offer a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of busy life. Norfolk is a quiet corner of England with a beautifully varied coastline and the famous Broads. Around every corner you will find pretty villages of traditional Norfolk cottages, miles of unspoilt beaches, countryside and rivers teeming with wildlife, relaxed towns and, in Norwich, one of the best preserved cities in England.
Suffolk cottages
Suffolk is possibly rural England at its very best - gently undulating countryside and timeless seaside resorts with hidden gems waiting to be discovered whilst on one of our cottage breaks in East Anglia. A distinctive feature of the Suffolk coast is its many shingle beaches, which are a haven for a fascinating mix of wildlife and plants. Fishing boats can be seen resting on the raked banks of pebbles or out at sea trawling the waves and fresh fish can be purchased from the fishermen's huts on the beaches.
Holiday cottages Lincolnshire
Perhaps surprisingly, Lincolnshire has some fine chalk hills as well as popular seaside resorts with miles of golden sands. Lincolnshire's backbone is formed by the Wolds, a line of chalk hills criss-crossed by lanes which lead to pretty hamlets, and valleys cut by streams and rivers, the highest area of land in eastern England between Yorkshire and Kent and classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. When it comes to cottage breaks Lincolnshire has some great family friendly resorts along the coast including Skegness, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes.
Holiday cottages Essex
The Essex countryside that Constable painted can still be found the further you move away from London, and the coastal villages and quiet estuaries have many hidden treasures. Maldon is a delightful old Essex town on the River Blackwater where the graceful Thames sailing barges are moored and provide a splendid spectacle. Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain and you can still see the Roman walls and town gate. Nearby is Constable Country - Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley which is dissected by the meandering River Stour. It was immortalised by John Constable in his paintings over 200 years ago and for some the countryside of this corner of East Anglia is the quintessential English rural landscape.
Cottages in Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire stretches across atmospheric Fenland where water is never far away; here the historic towns such as Ely emerge almost like islands. Flat but far from featureless, the Fens are the essence of East Anglia with waterways and rivers mingling with fields and wildlife and, of course, the city of Cambridge itself. One of the most beautiful cities in Britain with its magnificent university architecture, Cambridge is perhaps best enjoyed punting along the river.
