Places to visit in Essex
The Essex Coastline
Essex has over 350 miles of coastline, with many hidden treasures to be found from rugged coves to lengthy stretches of beautiful beaches. Burnham-on-Crouch, often called the Cowes of the East, and Brightlingsea come alive with yachts during the boating season. Walton on the Naze is a family seaside resort with sandy beaches, seafront gardens and quaint narrow streets. The pier is the second longest in England. Frinton-on-Sea has a reputation as an exclusive resort and retains an atmosphere of the 1920s. Here tree-lined avenues sweep down to the elegant esplanade and colourful Victorian-style beach huts.

Clacton-on-Sea
Clacton is a popular seaside town with tree-lined streets, a mix of sand and shingle beaches and beautiful cliff-top gardens. It has been dubbed the 'capital' of the so-called Essex Sunshine Coast. Clacton developed from a small village into a seaside resort in the late 19th-century with the fashion for coastal health and bathing. Paddle steamers provided the first direct route to the resort before the railway line opened in 1882. Today Clacton Pier seems to provide almost every conceivable amusement and is probably best described as a fairground over the sea.

Southend-on-Sea
Southend-on-Sea has attracted holidaymakers over the centuries and features the world's longest pleasure pier at over a mile long. There is traditional seaside fun aplenty with family attractions such as Adventure Island and Sealife Centre, or a ride on the railway to the end of the pier.

Maldon
Maldon is a delightful old hilltop town on the River Blackwater where the graceful Thames sailing barges are moored and provide a splendid spectacle. Sea trade has played an important role in the region's history, and still does. Traditional industries such as barge repairing, boat building, sail making and oyster fishing still thrive in the area and sea salt is still harvested from the Blackwater estuary. The estuaries are internationally recognised for their wildlife. Many opportunities exist for bird watchers, artists and walkers to explore the coast. Inland there are enchanting quiet villages, interesting churches and old pubs to discover.

Mersea Island
Mersea Island lies between the estuaries of the Colne and Blackwater rivers. This unique place is the most easterly inhabited island in the British Isles. Mersea Island is separated into West Mersea and East Mersea. West Mersea is a quiet resort with old fishing cottages and a shingly beach, noted for its sailing, fishing and oyster farming. East Mersea is quieter, more rural with smaller, less busy beaches. Maldon and nearby Mersea Island have been described as the 'New Brittany'. You can sample famous seafood in rustic family run restaurants such as the Company Shed, serving fresher than fresh world famous Colchester Oysters, whilst watching the boats bobbing in the water.
