Around every corner you will find pretty villages of traditional Norfolk cottages, miles of unspoilt shoreline, countryside and rivers teeming with wildlife. Its towns have a timeless feel and the capital, Norwich, is one of the best preserved cities in England. As one of the top destinations for a short break in holiday cottages Norfolk ranks high.
Much of Norfolk's coastline is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Stretching a distance of more than 40 miles, it features long sandy beaches, crumbling cliffs, flint pebble banks and salt marshes. Former fishing ports such as Cromer and Sherringham are now bustling seaside resorts yet still retain character. Just inland is Kings Lynn, with its riverside warehouses and merchants' houses testifying to the fact that it was once one of England's most prosperous ports. Nearby Sandringham, the county retreat of the royal family, opens to the public during the summer months. The village of Walsingham remains a famous place of pilgrimage for people of many faiths; in the Middle Ages it was known as the Nazareth of England and ranked alongside Rome and Jerusalem in importance for pilgrims. A little further inland is Swatham, the best preserved Georgian town in East Anglia.
If you are staying at any of our Norfolk holiday cottages a visit to Norwich is recommended. This lovely old city boasts a magnificent cathedral and, in Elm Hill, one of the finest medieval streets in the country. Its castle is now a museum and art gallery. Between here and the coast, the Norfolk Broads offer more than 120 miles of navigable inland waterway to explore.
South of Norwich, the county stretches down to the Suffolk border, via the peaceful Waveney Valley and Thetford Forest - the largest expanse of lowland pine woodland in Britain, whose way-marked trails are popular with mountain bikers of all abilities. From our holiday cottages Norfolk and these attractions await exploration.
