Its green pastures and dairy herds are renowned for producing the famous crumbly white Cheshire cheese. Within this lovely area are dotted distinctive black-and-white half-timbered houses set in idyllic gardens which typify the Cheshire countryside. One of Britain's finest timber-framed manor houses, Little Moreton Hall, sits just outside the pretty market town of Congleton a classic example of English Tudor domestic architecture.
Cheshire has exported salt for more than 2,000 years, the only remaining location in Britain where it is still produced on a large scale. At Northwich, visitors to the Salt Museum can learn how the industry has shaped the mid-Cheshire landscape and lives of those who have lived there and ride the impressive Anderton Boat Lift (the world's first) on a glass-top boat. History also comes alive in Nantwich, an old salt-mining town, with its black-and-white Tudor architecture and quaint streets. Contrastingly, nearby Jodrell Bank is home the world-famous Lovell Radio Telescope.
Where the Cheshire Plain gives way to the Peak District lies Macclesfield, whose once-thriving silk industry is remembered at the Silk Museum. Also recommended to visitors staying in any of our Cheshire holiday cottages is Tatton Park, home of the annual RHS annual flower show in July. Northwich
Several Cheshire towns have the suffix 'wich' in their name, such as Nantwich, Middlewich and Northwich. By the Middle Ages use of the 'wich' suffix in place names associated towns with salt production. Our English salt supply is chiefly derived from Cheshire and the Salt Museum in Northwich tells the intriguing story of mid-Cheshire and the industry that has shaped the landscape and lives of those who live there. Also in the town is The Anderton Boat Lift, the world's first boat lift. You can take a trip on a glass-top boat as the impressive lift towers above you.
