Throughout this agricultural region, the golden stone used for building homes, barns and field boundaries is a common thread, running through the historic towns and villages and knitting them into the surrounding landscape of rolling grassland and woods. This is one of the most beautiful areas of England, known and loved by many who enjoy holiday cottages in the Cotswolds. It is the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to be found in England and Wales, lying mainly within the counties of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, but extending into parts of Wiltshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.
Historically, many Cotswold towns were important centres of the wool trade and the abundance of wealthy merchants left a legacy of impressive buildings. Stow-on-the-Wold is a delightful market town and, along with Moreton-in-Marsh, is perhaps the best known of the small Cotswolds towns. Both stand on the Fosse Way, an old Roman road linking Exeter and Lincoln. The vast Market Square testifies to the former importance of Stow-on-the-Wold, whilst the high street in Moreton-in-Marsh features many elegant 18th-century inns and houses including the mock-Tudor Victorian Redesdale Market Hall.
Cotswold cottages conjure the image of picture-postcard villages, none more so than Bourton-on-the-Water, just four miles from Stow-on-the-Wold. With its series of elegant low bridges, tree-shaded greens and tidy stone banks it straddles the river Windrush. Cirencester is known as the capital of the Cotswolds and boasts one of the largest parish churches in England. Of all the UK's holiday cottages Cotswolds properties are perhaps the most quintessentially English.
