The bulk of the county comprises a patchwork of fields, meadows and small woodlands - a natural tapestry through which water, bridleways, footpaths, country lanes and ancient hedgerows thread their way. This can be seen to best advantage in the wonderfully named Golden Valley, a walker's paradise.
No holiday in Herefordshire cottages would be complete without experiencing the taste of cider. Cider making has shaped the local landscape and orchards feature aplenty. These are a delight to behold in all seasons, offering spring blossom, summer shade, the autumn apple harvest and festoons of mistletoe in winter. From our selection of holiday cottages Herefordshire and its cider route can be explored. In the county town of Hereford's cathedral a celebrated treasure - the Mappa Mundi - is well worth a detour. This map of the world, dating from 1290, depicts in biblical terms the extent of man's global knowledge at that time and is skilfully interpreted and displayed.
Other local attractions include Shipley Gardens , south-east of Hereford on the edge of the attractive Wye Valley. This semi-wild garden, located in beautiful countryside, has been created over the last 40 years on a site occupied since Roman times. High on a sandstone cliff overlooking a large loop in the River Wye is the historic market town of Ross on Wye. The spire of 13th century St. Mary's Church is visible for miles around and the river attracts canoeists, rafters and rowers. To the east, the old market town of Ledbury nestles under the Malvern Hills. It has several fine buildings, in particular the arcaded 17th century market hall which sits on pillars of chestnut wood.
Between Hereford and Worcester, Bromyard enjoys a scenic setting in this predominantly hop-growing area. To the west lies Leominster and its antique shops, in the heart of the Marches - the beautiful borderlands of England and Wales. Even further west is Kington a small, historic market town on the border. Here, our Herefordshire cottages are a popular base for walkers exploring the Offa's Dyke long distance footpath. There is good hill-walking accessible from here, with nearby Bradnor Hill and Hergest Ridge offering fine views. By selecting one of our holiday cottages Herefordshire and its many delights await exploration.
