Its prime tourist attraction is undoubtedly the university city of Oxford, situated on the pleasant upper reaches of the River Thames. However, there is more to this city than simply its famous dreaming spires. Attractions include punting on the River Cherwell, the fascinating Pitt Rivers Museum and the former gaol and stronghold of Oxford Castle, not to mention the charming indoor market and city-centre shopping. Oxford offers entertainment for all ages and tastes, family and friends.
As the Thames meanders westwards towards its Gloucestershire source the delightful towns and villages along its course take on a Cotswold appearance with honey-coloured sandstone buildings, many dating back to Georgian times, gracing Witney, Burford, Great Tew and Minster Lovell among others. If you are staying at any of our Oxfordshire cottages a visit to Blenheim Palace is recommended. The birthplace of Winston Churchill (he is buried in Bladon churchyard nearby) is located just to the north-west of Oxford and offers a great family day out, with its Capability Brown parkland and gardens and palace interior - the latter a superb example of English Baroque architecture. If interiors are your passion, be sure not to miss the beautifully preserved holiday retreat of Victorian designer William Morris in the charming village of Kelmscott. If you are looking for holiday cottages Oxfordshire is a great location for a get-together with family or friends, with plenty to do for everyone. Cottages close to Oxfordshire
