There is no better way of experiencing this landscape than by spending time exploring it on foot. The character of the lakes varies, from popular and pastoral Windermere, to brooding Wast Water, beautiful Ullswater to island-strewn Derwent Water. Whether walking the high fells, the many lakeside paths, or just enjoying the scenery from a boat on one of the lakes, this visitor cannot fail to be captivated by this paradise, captured in words and pictures by so many writers and artists in the past.
Perhaps the most famous of these is Beatrix Potter, who found inspiration for her children's tales in this landscape, rescuing many small farms from dereliction with the proceeds from her work. Her tales - many written from the charming farmhouse at Near Sawry (now in National Trust ownership) - are brought to life at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness, on the shores of Lake Windermere, a great day out for all the family. At the South Lakes Wild Animal Park , near Ulverston, animals from around the world are gathered together, offering another full day's itinerary for all the family.
However, besides the Lake District Cumbria has many other hidden gems. The bleak and foreboding northern Pennines have a mysterious splendour, popular with craftspeople and artists. The work of these artisans can be discovered from our selection of Cumbrian cottages. Several properties can be found in the vicinity of historic Appleby, famous for its horse fair. Sited in the Eden Valley at the foot of the fells, its attractive main street rises from the riverside church to the Norman castle. Here, gypsies and travellers meet annually to celebrate their culture and conduct their horse-trading business. To the north, in its hilly setting, lies Alston - England's highest market town. Despite its isolation, the steeply sloping cobbled market square is surrounded by a variety of businesses which support the community and surrounding Cumbrian cottages and farms.
