Situated between the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, the Vale of York has its own distinct character and can boast one of the finest medieval cities in Europe. York is dominated by its Minster - the largest Gothic church in northern Europe - and surrounded by over three miles of mediaeval city walls. To the west, offering easy access to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, are the elegant spa town of Harrogate and charming, small city of Ripon with its attractive cathedral. Between the two is the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey. The medieval ruins lie in a wooded valley which opens out into the renaissance gardens of Studley Royal. Towards the North York Moors, the changing landscape is reflected in the architecture of many quiet villages and market towns, such as Coxwold, Hutton le Hole and Helmsley. Here, also are some fine examples of the nation's built heritage including the extensive remains of Rievaulx Abbey, the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy and Castle Howard, one of the country’s grandest stately homes and location for Brideshead Revisited.
