Situated between the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, the Vale of York has its own distinct character, as well as one of the finest medieval cities anywhere. Our York holiday cottages are a great accommodation option for those visiting this beautiful city. York, dominated by its Minster - the largest Gothic church in northern Europe - and surrounded by over three miles of mediaeval city walls, is a labyrinth of narrow winding streets, such as the Shambles, lined with half-timbered houses. Steeped in history it is not surprising that the city has a range of museums, many well suited for children including the Jorvik Centre, which recreates Viking York, and the National Railway Museum. From one of our cottages York and these attractions invite exploration.

To the west, in the lee of the Yorkshire Dales, are the elegant spa town of Harrogate and the small charming city of Ripon with its attractive cathedral. Between the two is the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey. The medieval ruins are nestled in a wooded valley which opens out in contrast to the renaissance gardens of Studley Royal. Towards the North York Moors are many quiet villages and market towns with their distinctive red roofs such as Coxwold, Hutton le Hole and Helmsley. Here also are some fine examples of the nation's built heritage including the extensive remains of Rievaulx Abbey, the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy and Castle Howard, one of the grandest stately homes in Britain and the location for Brideshead Revisited. Vale of York cottages offer the ideal base for a short break or longer stay in this region.
