This region boasts some of the finest scenery in Britain. By selecting one of our holiday cottages the Yorkshire Dales and its many attractions can be discovered. Simply step from the doorway of our Dales cottages and a glorious landscape lies at your feet. Indeed, one of the best ways of discovering the attractions of this charming part of the world - designated a National Park - is on foot.
The Dales comprise a series of green, interconnected valleys; within their patchwork fields graze animals - largely sheep - contained by distinctive dry-stone walls which appear to march up the fell-sides. The region is dotted with traditional Yorkshire Dales cottages and barns; here you can see and hear the lapwing, the curlew and the skylark. This is limestone country, a landscape like no other. The valleys are enhanced by vast limestone 'pavements', brooding crags, deep gorges and waterfalls which gush into the cave systems below. In stark contrast, they are capped by gritstone moors. The village of Malham competes for title of most dramatic location, nestling below its towering limestone Cove. Further north, the village of Ingleton conceals its hidden treasure - the scintillating 'waterfalls walk'. Hiking in the Yorkshire Dales is incomparable, whether a riverside ramble or more challenging ascent of the fells. At the end of the day, there is always a Dales welcome to be found in one of the many tea rooms, or inns, which serve the region.
Sitting comfortably in this landscape are some fine historic buildings. If you are staying at any of our Yorkshire Dales holiday cottages a visit to the picturesque river-side ruin of Bolton Priory, in Wharfedale, is highly recommended. Further north, high above a bend in the River Swale, Richmond Castle keeps silent watch over the charming rooftops and cobbled marketplace of its town, while at Skipton the centuries-old castle guards the top of the town's main thoroughfare, voted Great British Street of the Year in 2008.
