The Dales are characterised by lush valleys covered in a patchwork of fields, partitioned by distinctive dry-stone walls, dotted with traditional Yorkshire Dales cottages, barns and surrounded by majestic fells and wild moorland. Here you can still see and hear the lapwing, the curlew and the skylark. This is limestone country, a landscape like no other. The valleys are enhanced by large areas of limestone pavement, brooding crags, gushing waterfalls and deep gorges. In stark contrast, they are overlooked by gritstone moorland and fells. There is probably nowhere that typifies the Yorkshire Dales better than in the area surrounding the pretty village of Malham, with its famous Cove - a tall, resplendent rock face forming a natural amphitheatre. The walking in the Yorkshire Dales is incomparable, whether a riverside amble or an exhilarating ascent of one of the many fells that dominate the landscape.

Sitting comfortably within this scene are some fine historic buildings.
