Edinburgh & the Borders

Here's what you can see and do when staying at one of our Edinburgh and Borders cottages. Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders are absolutely magnificent place to explore. The current border is formed in part by the beautiful River Tweed and the glorious Cheviot Hills. ... Read More »

East Lothian lies just to the east of Edinburgh and is officially the sunniest and driest area in Scotland, with more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in this country. It is a mix of sandy seashores, rich red agricultural soil, woodlands and rivers flowing down from the Lammermuir Hills through picturesque little villages. Golf reigns supreme in East Lothian - the golfer has a choice of nearly twenty courses in all including the famous Muirfield, Old Musselburgh and Gullane.

Midlothian is a largely undiscovered area to the south and west of Edinburgh, often just passed through en-route for the capital. However it is steeped in history and full of beautiful scenery, and nearby Edinburgh, Stirling, Fife and the Trossachs are easily accessible. In medieval times, the Knights Templar made their headquarters near Roslin having been driven from mainland Europe. Elaborately carved Rosslyn Chapel has long been associated with the Knights Templars and the Grail legend, featuring in Dan Brown's bestselling book The Da Vinci Code.

Berwickshire is an excellent location for enjoying a holiday with a flavour of Scotland yet conveniently located for visiting Northumberland as well as Edinburgh. It is a rich agricultural land to the north of the beautiful River Tweed with the rolling open moorland of the Lammermuir Hills in the north of the county. It boasts a rugged coastline including the jagged cliffs of St Abbs Head, a nature reserve for thousands of nesting seabirds. The stunning coastline is easily accessed from many of our Borders cottages.

Peeblesshire is situated at the heart of the Scottish Borders. The landscape is a succession of hills, broken by the valley of the Tweed which flows through the county from west to east. The River Tweed is one of the best salmon rivers in Europe making Peeblesshire a favourite with anglers with its streams being well stocked and unpolluted. There are some delightful glens in Peeblesshire formed by the numerous tributaries of the Tweed offering some superb walking especially in Glentress, where ospreys are back in residence.

Roxburghshire is a land of ancient abbeys, castles and historic houses just over the Cheviot Hills from Northumberland and formed the frontline in the many wars between England and Scotland. If you are staying at any of our Borders cottages, a trip to Kelso and Melrose, the main towns in the county, both on the River Tweed. Kelso Abbey was the largest of the Border abbeys and Melrose one of the richest. It is here that Robert the Bruce's heart is buried. Other ruined abbeys include Dryburgh, perhaps the most evocative monastic ruin in Scotland with Sir Walter Scott's grave and the impressive Jedburgh Abbey. By selecting one of our holiday cottages the Scottish Borders and its many attractions can be discovered.

Selkirkshire is a rolling, upland Borders county dissected by the valleys of the Ettrick and Yarrow rivers, which merge in the east with the River Tweed. The two main towns, both in the east of the county, are Selkirk the county town and the pleasant and spaciously laid out town of Galashiels, both of which were built around the textile milling industry. To the west lies the hilly and forested Ettrick Forest.
