The fact that the county town of Berwickshire is Duns, a quiet Borders community in Scotland and not Berwick in England, hints at the turbulent history of this county. Nowadays, it provides an excellent base for a holiday allowing visitors to sample a taste of Scotland while staying just over the border from the attractions of neighbouring Northumberland, with Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders within easy travelling distance.
Berwickshire is a rich agricultural land lying north of the beautiful River Tweed, with the rolling open moorland of the Lammermuir Hills to the county's north. It also boasts a beautiful coastline; from our selection of holiday cottages Berwickshire and its rugged cliffs await discovery. Attractions include the St Abbs Head nature reserve where thousands of nesting seabirds, including guillemots, kittiwakes and puffins, can be viewed in the breeding season. The county also features several castles and stately homes, with perhaps the finest being Ayton, a magnificent red sandstone edifice with an imposing silhouette and mighty tower.
