For many holidaymakers driving to Scotland, Dumfriesshire is the first county entered when driving up the M6 from England. The motorway crosses the border at Gretna, a name well known to elopers of the past. When it comes to holiday cottages Dumfries and Galloway offers a good choice of properties, located off the beaten track and set amidst a beautiful landscape.
Dumfriesshire, located on the north shore of the Solway Firth, comprises the three valleys of Nithsdale, Annandale and Eskdale. The gentle slopes and ancient forests of Nithsdale, in the west, conceal the major attraction of Drumlanrig Castle. This multi-turreted, 17th-century fortress houses many works of art and is a popular destination for visitors keen to also explore its formal gardens and forested country park, crisscrossed by footpaths and cycle tracks. Downstream, a short way inland from the Firth, sits picturesque Dumfries. It was here that Robert Burns, once a 'Customs and Exciseman', reputedly wrote 'Tam O'Shanter'.
The valley of Annandale conveniently follows the main A/M74 road, from pretty Annan on the Solway Coast up to the attractive and popular market town of Moffat. Nearby is the famous local hollow known as the Devil's Beef Tub and one of the county's best-known beauty spots, the 200-foot Grey Mare's Tail waterfall. The third valley, Eskdale, lies to the east stretching from Longtown in Cumbria to the quiet little mill community of Langholm, which comes alive during its Common Riding festival involving hundreds of horses. Beyond, lie the lonely Ettrick Hills typical of the Dumfriesshire uplands - bare and rounded with steep-sided valleys.
