Stirling lies at the crossroads of Scotland between east and west and lowland and highland. Its position made it one of the most important places in Scottish history. Rising high on a rocky crag above the town, the mighty castle dominates the landscape and held sway over Scottish history for centuries. In 1297 William 'Braveheart' Wallace defeated the English at Stirling Bridge - a 220ft monument to him stands nearby. The English were also defeated at the momentous Battle of Bannockburn just outside Stirling in 1314. The Trossachs National Park boasts heather-clad peaks and majestic lochs including the famous Loch Lomond and is known as the Highlands in miniature.
Perthshire is the historic region of central Scotland. All 42 Kings of Scotland were crowned at Scone close to Perth, itself once the country's capital, sitting between the Highlands and the Lowlands on one of the finest salmon-fishing rivers in the country, the Tay (Scotland's longest river). For visitors thinking of booking a holiday cottage Scotland could be the perfect destination.
Argyll has wide open spaces, distilleries, sumptuous gardens and awe-inspiring landscapes - a haven for lovers of the outdoors, from walkers and anglers to sailors and golfers. Mainland Argyll is characterised by a number of deep fjord-like lochs such as Linnhe, Leven, Sunart, Etive, Creran and Fyne. Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point on the UK mainland with a famous lighthouse and excellent views. The Mull of Kintyre is a long peninsula stretching south west down into the Irish Sea, from the yachtsman's paradise of Tarbert on Loch Fyne to Southend on the tip of The Mull itself. It's almost-treeless west coast looks over to the Isles of Islay and Jura. Its lush east coast looks across to the peaks of the Isle of Arran. When exploring Scotland cottages offer the type of flexible accommodation most families will require.
Fife offers visitors a great opportunity to explore some of Scotland's history, heritage and countryside. Lying between the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay, The Kingdom of Fife, as it is usually known, holds a distinct place in the history of Scotland. This has left many castles, fortified tower houses, abbeys, ruins and museums to explore. For more than 500 years Dunfermline was the nation's capital and is the final resting place of Robert the Bruce. St. Andrews, the home of golf was also once the ecclesiastical centre for Scotland and has an ancient university. Falkland Palace, at the foot of the Lomond Hills, is probably the best example of French-influenced Renaissance architecture in Britain. The eastern part of Fife which juts out into the North Sea is called the East Neuk. Here are quaint picturesque fishing villages such as Pittenweam, Crail and Anstruther.
Situated to the north of the River Tay, Angus has a rugged coastline and gentle rolling foothills running into the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park. The main city is Dundee on the north shore of the River Tay overlooking Fife to the south. Known as the City of Discovery, Captain Scott's Antarctic polar expedition ship R.R.S. Discovery is berthed on the riverside. To the north-west lie the Grampian Mountains and many glens offering superb walking such as Clova, Prosen and Esk. The coastline has sandy beaches, rugged coves, fishing ports and fine links golf courses. Arbroath is home to the famous Smokie and has a well-preserved 12th century Abbey where Scottish nobles signed the Declaration of Independence in 1320.
