To the north of the River Tay, Angus has a rugged coastline and gentle rolling foothills running into the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park. The main city is Dundee, situated on the north shore of the River Tay and overlooking Fife to the south. Known as the City of Discovery, Captain Scott's Antarctic polar expedition ship R.R.S. Discovery is berthed on the riverside and well worth a visit. The Grampian Mountains and their glens, such as Clova, Prosen and Esk, lie to the north-west providing many opportunities for walking enthusiasts. Arbroath, home of the famous Smokie, has a well-preserved 12th-century Abbey where Scottish nobles signed the Declaration of Independence in 1320. This seaside town is a holiday resort in its own right, reputedly one of the sunniest spots in Scotland.
