If you're considering holiday cottages in Argyll, this region blessed with some of Scotland's finest scenery is a destination worth considering. Covering a vast area, it takes in dramatic mountains, long-forgotten castles, prehistoric ruins and a chain of islands forming the Inner Hebrides. Lying to the west and north-west of Glasgow, on Scotland's west coast, this county covers an area from Appin in the north to the Mull of Kintyre in the south and from Loch Lomond to the Isles of Coll and Tiree.
From any of our cottages in Argyll this county's wide-open spaces, distilleries, sumptuous gardens and awe-inspiring landscapes are at hand; the county attracts lovers of the great outdoors, from walkers and anglers to sailors and golfers. Mainland Argyll is dissected by a number of deep, fjord-like, lochs such as Linnhe, Leven, Sunart, Etive, Creran and Fyne. With over 3,000 miles of coastline, these waters - and the western islands - offer exceptional sailing opportunities and sailing festivals are popular in the summer months.
When staying at any of our Argyll cottages a trip to the port of Oban, the largest settlement in northern Argyll, is recommended. Founded as a fishing community in the 18th century, it is overlooked by McCraig's Tower an attempt by the Victorians to replicate Rome's Coliseum. The picturesque town of Inveraray, on the western shores of Loch Fyne, is one of the most attractive in Scotland. In the 18th century the Duke of Argyll demolished the original settlement to allow more room for his rebuilt castle, re-housing residents in a new village. His mock-Gothic palace sits on the loch side. Near Loch Awe is the glen of Kilmartin, containing Scotland's richest prehistoric landscape, with its cairns and standing stones dating from 3,000BC.
The most westerly point on the UK mainland, Ardnamurchan, is famous for its lighthouse and excellent views. The long peninsula of the Mull of Kintyre stretches south west down into the Irish Sea, from the yachtsman's paradise of Tarbert, on Loch Fyne, to Southend at the tip of the Mull. The almost-treeless west coast looks over to the Isles of Islay and Jura while its lush east coast offers views of the Isle of Arran peaks.
