Founded in the 18th century as a fishing village, it is dominated by McCraig's Tower an unfinished Victorian imitation of the Coliseum in Rome. The town of Inveraray is a picturesque village on the western shores of Loch Fyne, one of the most attractive in Scotland. In the 18th century the Duke of Argyll demolished the original village to give his rebuilt castle more space, and re-housed the population in a new village. Nearby is the castle, a mock Gothic palace on the loch side. Near Loch Awe is the glen of Kilmartin which boasts Scotland's richest prehistoric landscape containing cairns and standing stones dating from 3,000BC.
Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point on the UK mainland with a famous lighthouse and excellent views The Mull of Kintyre is a long peninsula stretching south west down into the Irish Sea, from the yachtsman's paradise of Tarbert on Loch Fyne to Southend on the tip of The Mull itself.
