Lying between the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay, with the Ochil and Cleish Hills on the western border, its location makes it ideal for those seeking a quiet and peaceful cottage holiday mixed with a little bracing sea air and some of the finest links golf courses in the world.
Once settled in your choice of our holiday cottages in Fife this historic county invites exploration. The Kingdom of Fife, as it is usually known, holds a distinct place in the history of Scotland. This has left many castles, fortified tower houses, abbeys, ruins and museums to explore. For more than 500 years Dunfermline was the nation's capital and is the final resting place of Robert the Bruce. St. Andrews, the home of golf was also once the ecclesiastical centre for Scotland and has an ancient university. Falkland Palace, at the foot of the Lomond Hills, is probably the best example of French-influenced Renaissance architecture in Britain. Mary Queen of Scots was a frequent visitor to Falkland which, like the famous chateaux in the French Loire Valley, was built to accommodate the royal court when they came to hunt in the nearby forests. The eastern part of Fife which juts out into the North Sea is called the East Neuk. Here are quaint picturesque fishing villages such as Pittenweam, Crail and Anstruther, home to the Scottish Fisheries Museum. The villages feature distinctive Fife cottages with their Flemish-style stepped gables, whitewashed buildings, red pan-tiles and narrow cobbled streets.
For outdoor types there is the Fife Coastal Path, which stretches from the Forth to the Tay Bridges passing some of the finest, uncrowded sandy beaches in the country. Alternatively, with over 300 miles of new cycleway along the length and breadth of the Kingdom, this is a great way to experience and explore Fife.
