All 42 Kings of Scotland were crowned at Scone close to Perth, itself once the country's capital, sitting between the Highlands and the Lowlands on one of the finest salmon-fishing rivers in the country, the Tay (Scotland's longest river). Just to the south lies Loch Leven, the largest loch in the Lowlands, and a castle on one of its islands where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. Loch Leven is now a bird sanctuary of international renown.
From your holiday cottage Perthshire, and some of its best scenery, is to be seen approaching Perth from the south west through Auchterarder and the famous championship golf course of Gleneagles. To the west of Perth is Strathearn leading to Crieff, Comrie, St Fillans and Lochearn along the length of the river and then Loch Earn. Crieff became known for the healing powers of the water with Crieff Hydro a major attraction together with Scotland's oldest distillery, Glenturret. Comrie is known as the earthquake capital of Scotland being built right on the Highland Boundary Fault. Records of its shakes are kept within the tiny Earthquake House. At the eastern end of Loch Earn lies the small picturesque village of St Fillans, a favourite destination for water sports enthusiasts and hill walkers.
Aberfeldy lies on the banks of the River Tay. In the churchyard of nearby Fortingall is a yew tree some 3000 years old and believed to be Europe's oldest living thing. Fortingall is also the start of Glen Lyon, the longest Glen in Scotland at 32 miles. It has one of the most dramatic entrances as the sides rise steeply with the river flowing through the heavily wooded cleft. At the far end of the glen stands mighty Ben Lawers, Perthshire's highest and most fascinating mountain which is home to possibly the finest selection of alpine flowers. If you are staying at any of our Perthshire cottages a trip along the banks of Loch Tay, Perthshire's largest loch and magnificent stretch of water, some 14 miles long, is recommended. Located at the head of the loch are Killin and the fabulous Falls of Dochart.
