Here's what you can see and do when staying at one of our Hampshire cottages.
Hampshire will soon be able to boast two national parks within its borders - the New Forest and recently confirmed South Downs National Park. Hampshire comprises fine rolling green hills and tranquil villages of the South Downs to the north and ancient forests of the New Forest in the south, combined with the historic cities of Winchester, Portsmouth and Southampton.
The New Forest was once a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror. Today deer, ponies and cattle continue to roam on its heaths and in its woods. It is a unique English landscape of ancient oak and beech woodland, heather-covered heath, gentle farmland, coastal salt marsh and picturesque villages featuring typical New Forest cottages. It once provided the timber needed to build the English sea-going fleet. The forest's inhabitants still exercise certain privileges, including 'pannage' (the right to allow pigs to forage for acorns) and 'estover' (the right to cut firewood). Nearby is Beaulieu, a great destination for a family day out from one of our New Forest cottages, with lots for everyone to enjoy including the world famous National Motor Museum, Palace House, home of the Montagu family, and historic Beaulieu Abbey.
The chalk downs provide excellent walking country and the clear chalk streams of the Rivers Test and Itchen are world famous trout rivers - ideal for anglers staying at holiday cottages in Hampshire. Whilst staying at any of our Hampshire cottages a visit to Winchester is recommended. The Itchen flows through the historic city that was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex and of England until the Norman Conquest. Winchester is famed for its beautiful cathedral, home to the legendary Round Table, built by Merlin the Wizard for King Arthur. The historic dockyard of Portsmouth is home to world-famous ships such as The Mary Rose - Henry VIII's flagship, and HMS Victory - Nelson's flagship. They are overlooked by the Spinnaker Tower, which soars to a height of over 500 feet and is the UK's second tallest publicly-accessible building, offering stunning views over the Solent. Southampton also has a maritime history. The Mayflower sailed from here as did the Titanic. The Maritime Museum has exhibits of both these ships. By selecting one of our holiday cottages Hampshire and its many attractions can be discovered.
