The New Forest was once William the Conqueror's royal hunting ground. Today, deer, ponies and cattle roam at will in its heaths and woodlands. It is a unique English landscape of ancient oak and beech forest, heather-covered heath, gentle farmland, coastal salt marsh and picturesque villages featuring typical Hampshire cottages. Once this region produced the timber to build the English sea-going fleet. The forest's inhabitants still exercise certain privileges, including 'pannage' (the right to allow pigs to forage for acorns) and 'estover' (the right to cut firewood). Beaulieu is a great destination for a family day out from one of our New Forest cottages, offering something for everyone to enjoy, including the world famous National Motor Museum, Palace House, home of the Montagu family, and historic Beaulieu Abbey.
The chalk downs offer excellent walking country and the clear chalk streams of the Rivers Test and Itchen are world famous trout rivers - ideal for anglers staying at holiday cottages in Hampshire. A visit to Winchester is also recommended for anyone staying at one our Hampshire cottages. The Itchen flows through this historic city, once capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex and, indeed, England until the Norman Conquest. Winchester's beautiful cathedral is home to the legendary Round Table, said to have been built by Merlin for King Arthur. In Portsmouth's historic dockyard, world-famous ships such as Henry VIII's flagship The Mary Rose and Nelson's HMS Victory have their permanent berths. Here, the UK's second tallest publicly-accessible building, Spinnaker Tower (more than 500-foot high), offers an excellent vantage point over The Solent. Southampton also has a maritime history. The Mayflower sailed from here, as did Titanic. The city's Maritime Museum contains exhibits on both these ships.
