Further down the coast, Brighton adds urban chic to these attractions and West Wittering is surfer heaven. The South Downs, stretching from Eastbourne and Harting Down in the west of Sussex to Winchester in Hampshire, are home to some of the most quintessentially English scenes. From open chalk grassland to ancient forest and lush river valleys, this unique landscape now has protected National Park status with much for the visitor to explore from one of our cottages in Sussex.
Finally, no visit would be complete without touring some of the county's wonderful gardens. These range from landscaped parks and woodland estates to intimate walled gardens, formal garden 'rooms' and wild and romantic grottoes and include Borde Hill in the heart of the Sussex High Weald and the famous Great Dixter House, birthplace and home of the late gardening writer Christopher Lloyd. Herstmonceaux is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in beautiful parkland and Sheffield Park was laid out by 'Capability' Brown.
