Read on to discover what attractions you can explore while staying at one of our holiday cottages in Powys. In Powys, the vast ancient kingdom making up Mid Wales holiday cottages provide the perfect accommodation for visitors. This gentle landscape, of rolling hills and moorland, is often undervalued in comparison to its better-known neighbours Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons. Yet from our selection of holiday cottages Wales and its unique character are very much in evidence here.

Powys is divided by the rivers Severn, Wye and Usk, which flow west to east across the region. The wild mountains and exposed hills to the north and west contrast sharply with the flat river plains to the east. In the south of the region, the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park provide a natural border. When it comes to holiday cottages Powys has a good choice close to beauty spots and unspoiled villages. It is also popular with those seeking opportunities for open-air activities - angling, golf, walking, cycling, horse-riding and water sports are all well catered-for. In addition it is a place of great gardens, historic castles and countryside canals.
Machynlleth, to the north, lies at the edge of Snowdonia and was capital of Wales in the 15th century. Today the village is home to the Centre for Alternative Energy, a self-sufficient community generating its own power and water while educating visitors on the topical subject of self-sufficiency. Near Rhayader, a small market town on the Wye, can be found Wales' highest waterfall, at Pistyll. Beneath its cascading waters is a natural stone arch known as Fairy Bridge. Rhayader provides a great base for a Mid Wales holiday cottage, ideal for exploring the beautiful Elan Valley and Cambrian Mountains to the west where the red kite and other upland birds such as merlin and peregrine falcons soar. As well as historic buildings, the spa town of Llandrindod Wells offers a wooded park and lake to enjoy celebrating its heritage with a Victorian Festival each summer.
The Brecon Beacons National Park offers some excellent hill-walking opportunities, comprising four mountain ranges; on the English border to the east lie the Black Mountains, Fforest Fawr, the Brecon Beacons and, in the west, the Black Mountain. Much of the area consists of high open country with red sandstone peaks; whilst to the south are limestone crags, wooded gorges, waterfalls and caves. By selecting one of our Powys holiday cottages Wales and its many attractions can be discovered.Cottages close to Powys
