Here, bustling Llangollen was once a popular spa while Denbigh Castle stands guard above the historic walls of its namesake, protecting the largest town in the Vale of Clwyd. Beside the River Clwyd, Ruthin is another beautiful old town featuring many buildings of note.
The Clwydian Range lies to the east of the Vale of Clwyd, a narrow chain of hills running from the coast down towards Llangollen and the Dee Valley. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is noted for its contrasting scenery of high heather moorland and small hedged, fields and coppices of the lower slopes. Impressive limestone outcrops burst through in several places along the eastern flanks of this range. Llangollen is set below the hills, in the Dee Valley, home to the annual International Music Eisteddfod. From our cottages Llangollen and its environs are easily explored; a popular pastime is strolling along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the world's tallest canal boat bridge - to view the colourful canal narrow boats.
