For example, by selecting one of our holiday cottages Monmouthshire's claim to having the most castles per square mile of any county in Britain can be explored.
Monmouthshire encompasses the dramatic Black Mountains in the north, the market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth, Chepstow on the banks of the River Severn, the beautiful Wye Valley and the Vale of Usk. The Black Mountains are the most easterly peaks in the Brecon Beacons - not to be mistaken with the Black Mountain (singular) a wilderness environment in its own right. The Black Mountains (plural) are a little less demanding for walkers, comprising long, narrow valleys dotted with farms and cottages rising to over 2000 feet with the Offa's Dyke long-distance footpath running along the England/Wales border ridge. Abergavenny is dominated by three peaks - Blorenge, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Skirrid Fawr - and is consequently a popular walking and outdoor activity holiday destination. The recently designated World Heritage Site Blaenavon Industrial Landscape is nearby.
Elegant Monmouth boasts some fine Tudor and Georgian buildings in a splendid location at the confluence of three rivers. The Monnow Bridge, its narrow 13th-century gateway, is thought to be the only surviving fortified bridge in Britain. The ancient walled town of Chepstow is built around an impressive Norman Castle constructed to guard the border between Wales and England.
At the heart of the county lies Raglan village, famed for its 15th-century castle. When staying at any of our holiday cottages in Monmouthshire a visit to Tintern Abbey is also recommended. Once the richest monastic establishment in all of Wales, though now in ruins, its grand design is still evident.
