If you are staying at any of our Cambrigeshire cottages a trip to Ely, just a few miles from this property, is a must. The city of Ely is rich in history, charm and beauty and is the jewel in the crown of the Fens. Built on a chalk hill this small city is dominated by its cathedral, one of England's most beautiful and largest. It was one of the premier Saxon churches in England, on a par with Glastonbury and Canterbury. The imposing structure towers across the fens for miles around and is known locally as the 'Ship of the Fens' famous for its unique Octagon tower, which when lit can be seen for tens of miles. The cathedral is also home to the only national museum dedicated to stained glass. The city has a splendid array of other historic buildings, notably the Bishop's Palace, King's School and St. Michael's. There is also a beautiful waterside area where you can enjoy a boat trip, riverside walk or explore the many cafes and antiques shops.
