I love to come across local traditions that have survived especially in such unassuming places as Grenoside where these Peak District cottages lie, just over the Derbyshire border in South Yorkshire. The Grenoside Sword Dance forms an important mid-winter ritual for the village and can be traced back to the 1750s. Its origins are unknown but thought to relate to the Winter Solstice. Nowadays it is performed on Boxing Day morning in front of large crowds in Main Street. In the last few years the walking tours have been recreated. In the past these tours were by request to perform at local grand houses for beer and sandwiches but other tours were for the enjoyment of the local people in outlying areas of the village.
