Just over the border from this Berwickshire cottage is Berwick-upon-Tweed, a town with a rich and turbulent past. The town changed hands many times before 1482, often in bloody conflicts, but since then it has remained English. The town walls, built to keep the Scots out, are almost completely intact and can be walked around. It has certainly attracted its fair share of famous admirers in the past. Lancastrian artist L.S. Lowry was a huge fan of the town and today there is a specially created Lowry Trail for those who want to explore his favourite holiday resort. Further up the coast is St Abbs Head where on the dramatic cliffs you can see nesting puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes and shags from April to August.
