Cathy's Say

These comfortable Borders holiday cottages are close to the picturesque country town of Kelso, at the junction of the Rivers Tweed and Teviot. The town, one of the most visited in the Scottish Borders, is full of architectural and historical interest that can be explored by following the town trail. Kelso Abbey was once the grandest of the Border Abbeys. However after its repeated destruction by the English only fragments remain, although these ruins are still an impressive structure. The spacious Kelso Square claims to be the largest in Scotland. At its centre is still the Bull Ring, a reminder of past market days. The square is now host to many specialist shops. Many of the streets in the town give reference to the activities once carried out there including Coalmarket, Distillery Lane, Oven Wynd, Peat Wynd and Mill Wynd. The graceful five-arched bridge over the Tweed, built by John Rennie in 1803, was the model for London's Waterloo Bridge. In parkland just upstream overlooking the Tweed stands Floors Castle, Scotland's largest inhabited house, with outstanding collections of paintings, furniture, porcelain and tapestry.
