Spectacularly located overlooking the turbulent waters of Pentland Firth, and just 20 yards from a lovely sandy beach, these recently refurbished and very comfortable fishermen’s cottages offer a cosy base from which to explore the far north and Orkney. The surrounding area is a haven for wildlife and perfect for bird watching, fishing and surfing. Served by a rail link (cycle hire is also available), Thurso is Britain’s most northerly town whose seaward views are dominated by the cliffs of Dunnet Head and the Old Man of Hoy – its harbour offers a gateway to Orkney. The Castle of Mey is 8 miles. John O Groats 20 miles. Shops, pubs, restaurants and fishing tackle hire are in walking distance.

When we decided to set up UK Cottages we wanted to offer a website that helps you to research an area of the UK which might be of interest to you, give you an idea of what it has to offer and then present you with a selection of quality-assured self catering holiday cottages from our trusted partners to suit your needs. Peter has worked in senior positions within the travel industry for nearly 30 years.
I was a journalist and latterly a deputy editor of a newspaper until I began to raise my family. We are both keen walkers and have the good fortune to live in the Yorkshire Dales. We both have a passion for exploring this beautiful island of ours and believe that staying in self catering holiday cottages is one of the best ways to really get to know the UK. There is so much variety in the landscape, the architecture, the customs, the food and drink and the people.
Despite increasing uniformity, we believe that you can still discover this rich diversity if you look hard enough and you will have a much more fulfilling holiday for that. Plus, we not only want to share our passion for the UK countryside with you, but want you to share thoughts and ideas with us to possibly help someone else choose the right place for their holiday cottage.
