Durham holiday cottages like Curlew Cottage are popular with those wanting to explore the beautifully bleak northern Pennines. They say that it is the last wilderness in England, so a cottage holiday here really is something different. Let's be clear, the scenery is not picture-postcard but the bleakness has a great beauty and the vast emptiness is inspiring. I've got to know this area over the last few years as I have been walking all the Pennine fells over 2000 feet. Unlike the Lake District there are no dramatic peaks, even though it is home to the highest point in the Pennine chain - Cross Fell - it is mainly desolate, heather-clad fells. On these windswept moors you will see ski lifts which are put into use when there is particularly high snowfall in winter. From Stanhope in upper Weardale it is easy to get between the other Durham Dales including beautiful Teesdale as well the valleys of both the South and North Tyne and Alston where, perversely, the river flows north-west, away from the North Sea where it eventually ends up.
Commanding spectacular views over the Wear Valley from its peaceful location above Stanhope, this comfortable, stone built cottage enjoys lovely lawned and terraced gardens an excellent vantage point for spotting the varied wildlife. Numerous fell and riverside walks can be followed from the doorstep, and the many delights of the Lakes, Dales and Borders are within easy reach. Barnard Castle is a short drive, and Hexham and Durham are under 35 miles. Riding and coarse fishing available locally. Shops and inns 300 yards.
One bedroom. Sitting room with gas fire and French doors to sundeck. Utility room. Lower ground floor: Dining room and galley kitchen both with low vaulted ceiling. First floor: Double bedroom with king size bed. Bathroom/WC (shower over bath).
