In a nutshell: Pet friendly, king size bed, short walk to pub. Almost on the doorstep of this contemporary Lake District cottage, and well worth a visit, is Holker Hall probably the finest house in South Lakeland. It is a superb Victorian residence built on a grand scale in an Elizabethan style in distinctive red sandstone. The surrounding gardens cover 24 acres of woodland and formal garden in an intriguing mix of Italianate design with English tradition. A renowned garden festival is held here in late spring, when the colourful displays of plants and shrubs are at their best. Within the grounds is the Lakeland Motor Museum, a private collection of vintage and classic cars - Alpha Romeos, Lagondas, Bentleys and Buicks - as well as scooters and tractors.
