Cathy's Say

Our featured Cumbrian cottages include this property in Cockermouth, which reached national notoriety from the devastating floods in November 2009 that flooded much of central Cockermouth, leaving huge amounts of destruction, and most of the shops, restaurants and pubs in the town completely wrecked. With the effort of the stoical residents many of the businesses were back up and open within a year. Lying just outside the boundary of the Lake District National Park, Cockermouth is an attractive market town not overwhelmed by the tourist atmosphere of Keswick and Ambleside. Today's visitors are attracted by the town's calm, its nearness to some of the more peaceful lakes and mountains, and the Jennings Brewery, which offers tours around the brewery.

Created by the conversion of an old textile mill it is just a stroll over the river footbridge into the picturesque market place (right photograph). Walking in glorious scenery, boating on Bassenthwaite Lake, Muncaster Castle, Maryport’s harbour and aquarium and Whinlatter Forest Park are all easily accessible. Shop and pub 100 yards.
