Cathy's Say

In a nutshell: Pet friendly, internet access, wood burning stove, two bathrooms. On the doorstep of these comfortable Lake District cottages are some of the most spectacular limestone pavements in Europe. This distinctive landscape spanning an expanse of rough upland country - formed through the weathering of rock to create deep fissures known as grikes, which divide the limestone into curious blocks called clints - is the most extensive area of pavements in the UK outside the Ingleborough area in Yorkshire. Look closer in this isolated yet inspiring area and you will find woodland plants growing in the limestone fissures, among them harts tongue fern, wood anemone and limestone fern.

Property Description

Set amid an old apple orchard, these holiday cottages - a countryside escape offering modern indulgences for a relaxing stay - retain the character and charm of the original 17th century Westmorland bank barn and boast spectacular views of the Pennines and Eden Valley across the paddock. Enjoy varied walks from the door, including the limestone pavement, Pate Hole Caves and Rutter Falls. Great Asby has a children’s play area, a naturally-formed well and a village pub serving real ale and meals in front of a crackling fire. Appleby-in-Westmorland, 5 miles, is a picturesque market town with a winding river, cobbled streets, independent shops, galleries and boutiques, and is home to the famous Gypsy Horse Fair held in June. Award-winning pubs and restaurants, swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, cycle hire and golf course all available. Town Head Farm Cottages are a superb base for exploring the surrounding area, including the Pennine Way, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, NT properties, Rheged Visitors Centre, Hadrian’s Wall and the renowned Village Bakery in Melmerby.
