Cumbrian cottages like Rose Cottage are an ideal base to explore Hadrian's Wall, which passes just a couple of miles away. The Hadrian's Wall Path has been a recent welcome addition to the long distance paths crossing the country. The trail follows the line of the Wall built in the second century AD by order of Roman Emperor Hadrian as a defensive barrier that continued in use for most of the next 300 years until the Romans finally left our shores in the 5th century. Good public transport along the Wall means that linear walks can be undertaken with some planning. Alternatively there are many circular walks along various stretches of the Wall to give a flavour of one of the UK's greatest monuments as well as the countryside it crosses.
