If you are staying at any of our Sussex cottages a trip to the haunting Romney Marsh, next to Rye, is recommended. This is an extraordinary part of England with a rich history. The area has always had to defend itself against the elements, as well as against foreign invaders. A low-lying area, once under the sea, it is now grazed by sheep to produce sought after salt marsh lamb. Famed for its emptiness, its sweeping horizon punctuated by church towers skies gives a real sense of solitude. Plus there is the distinctive coastline including Dungeness with its lonely lighthouse, smattering of fishing shacks and shingle beach.

On the banks of the River Rother (pictured), with boats passing at high tide, this very comfortable first floor apartment (shown second from right) is ideally located a short stroll from the heart of the quaint town of Rye. One of the ancient Cinque Ports, its history evocatively depicted in a local ‘Sound and Light Show’, Rye also boasts a wealth of interesting shops and antique emporiums, galleries, restaurants and historic inns. Close by is the nature reserve at Rye Harbour – also an excellent spot for fishing and sailing – whilst a little further afield lie Battle Abbey, romantic Bodiam Castle, Great Dixter and Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens. Day trips by rail to France depart from Ashford, 20 miles. Shops and pubs 400 yards.
