Our featured Kent holiday cottages include this, until very recently, working windmill which has a fascinating history. Sarre Windmill was originally built in 1820 for grinding the corn of local farmers on the Isle of Thanet - the most easterly part of Kent. It was upgraded in the 19th century with the addition of steam machinery and continued to grind corn until the early 1940s. The mill was used as an observation post during the Second World War and remained semi-derelict until 1986, when restoration was started, being completed in 1991.

A picturesque landmark since 1820, and fully operational until very recently, this splendid Grade II listed windmill provides a unique holiday location, its ground floor skilfully converted into comfortable accommodation for two. The mill was previously open to the public as a working mill, and today’s visitors can explore its upper two floors of fascinating history. Adjacent Millers Cottage was a shop with tea rooms to serve visitors to the mill. This is now a comfortable cottage with unrivalled views of the mill. Sarre is a wonderful central base for discovering the many attractions to be found within the Garden of England. The renowned coastal towns of Ramsgate, Whitstable, Margate and Broadstairs are all within an 8 mile drive as is the medieval town of Sandwich and the lovely city of Canterbury with its magnificent cathedral and wealth of historic interest. Closer to home, delicious local fare can be sampled within a short stroll at the oak beamed, 15th century Crown Inn. Shop 1.5 miles.
