Our cottages in Kent include this listed building with sea views in the centre of the charming town of Hythe. It was part of the Confederation of Cinque Ports (from the French meaning 'Five Ports') formed around 1050. Under this arrangement the four Kentish coastal towns of Hythe Sandwich, Dover, and New Romney (the fifth being Hastings in East Sussex) agreed to provide the king with men and ships in return for special privileges, reflecting this area's importance to the nation's defence.
