Among the holiday cottages Kent can offer is this cosy cottage in the centre of Sandwich, one of the best preserved medieval towns in England. In the past Sandwich was an important port and one of the Cinque Ports - five coastal towns (four of which are in Kent) - Sandwich, Dover, Hythe and New Romney (the other being Hastings) - which agreed to provide the king with men and ships in return for special privileges. Before the River Stour silted up, the river was wide and deep enough for great sailing ships. Today, the ships have been replaced by smaller craft plying the river and moored in the quayside.
