Among the holiday cottages north Devon can offer is this stylishly converted barn within walking distance of Great Torrington. Set high on a cliff top above the River Torridge in the heart of rolling, unspoilt countryside it boasts a good selection of visitor attractions for a town of its size. Great Torrington had a significant role in the English Civil War, specifically, the Battle of Great Torrington in 1646 which marked the end of the Royalist resistance in the West Country. This led to the eventual defeat and execution of King Charles I. The new, interactive, 17th century family experience of Torrington 1646 celebrates the town's little-known importance in English history. The Dartington Crystal Factory offers tours to see how its clear, contemporary glassware glass is made. Just out of Torrington is RHS Rosemoor, a beautiful 65 acre garden of national importance. Whatever the season, the garden is a unique and enchanting place that people return to time and again for ideas, inspiration or simply to enjoy a marvellous day out.
