Bluebell Cottage is one of three Northumbrian cottages close to the small market town of Rothbury in the picturesque Coquet Valley. The town reminds me what most of rural England must have been like forty years ago. The High Street boasts a number of traditional independent shops and the town has a pleasant mix of old stone and newer brick-built properties clustered along the sloping banks of the river at the foot of the Cheviots. Just outside Rothbury is Cragside House, set in gardens that are a rocky wonderland interspersed by trees through which run miles of footpaths, cycleways and a rhododendron maze. However what makes this place unique is the wealth of ingenious gadgetry in the house - installed by the Victorian inventor whose family home it was - including fire alarm buttons, telephones, a passenger lift and a Turkish bath suite.

Boasting fine country views, they sit in a little group of six, just 10 miles from the market town of Alnwick's castle and acclaimed gardens, and 20 minutes' drive from Northumberland's coastline of beautiful beaches, historic castles and charming fishing villages. Dene House Farm's excellent facilities include free use of a heated indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym, 9 hole golf course, archery and tennis; holistic or beauty treatments are available at extra cost. Good walking, fishing and riding are found nearby, the pretty town of Rothbury and Cragside House (N.T.) are worth a visit and the cosmopolitan city of Newcastle upon Tyne with its fine architecture and superb shopping is just 30 minutes' drive. A one mile stroll leads to an award winning grocery store and butcher, pubs and restaurants in Longframlington village.
