Among the holiday cottages Northumberland can offer is Periwinkle Cottage in the pleasant village of Embleton, and just inland from the wide expanse of Embleton Bay. A most enjoyable walk is to go out across the links golf course to the shoreline and down the coast to Dunstanburgh Castle towering at the southern end of the bay. The fortress was built on a magnificent scale and rivalled castles of its day, standing on a remote headland. The ruins have an eerie feel and were a favourite subject of the painter Turner. You can return via an inland path or extend the walk by continuing a further mile or so on the coastal path to Craster. This is an interesting fishing village and harbour with a reputation for the most delicious oak-smoked kippers in the country, with a recommended restaurant right next to the smoke house.
