This lush oak-wooded, steep-sided river gorge, the deepest in the South West, with its natural beauty, fascinating history and many legends, can be explored through a variety of exhilarating short or long walks. A beautiful woodland walk along the top of the gorge leads down to the spectacular 90-foot White Lady waterfall. Enchanting riverside walks lead to a deep ravine scooped out by the River Lyd as it plunges into a succession of whirlpools including the thrilling Devil's Cauldron. The coasts, both north and south, are within easy reach for a day out on the beach whilst the nearest town is Launceston, just over the border in Cornwall, an ancient market town which was once the capital of old Cornwall. It is quintessentially Cornish, with its Georgian houses, narrow streets and market square all overlooked by its castle keep high on a mount.
