When it comes to holiday cottages Devon has a good choice of beaches within easy reach. One of the best local beaches is Mothecombe, a large, sheltered and unspoilt beach with lots of fine sand at low tide and safe areas to bathe in shallow waters. Situated at the mouth of the River Erme and set within gentle, tree covered cliffs it has plenty of rocks to explore and climb. Privately owned but open to the public on certain days of the week only, it is a beautiful and usually less busy beach than many in the area. Just a few miles away is the popular beach at Bigbury-on-Sea. Backed by low cliffs and on one side the River Avon estuary, Burgh Island is situated just off the beach. The island, home to a stunning art deco hotel, is accessible across a sand spit at low tide and via tractor at high tide.

In the glorious country setting of the South Hams, this imaginatively converted former Methodist chapel lies close to the local beaches of Mothecombe (footpath access) and the award winning beaches at Bigbury-on-Sea and Thurlestone. Modbury – a gem for antique hunters – and Ivybridge – southern gateway to Dartmoor – are about 5 miles away and close by is Totnes, the historic capital of Devon, from where visitors can enjoy cruises up the River Dart, the loveliest river in England. Dartmouth, with its bustling streets, shops and quayside, and Salcombe, a haven for sailors and water sports enthusiasts, are well worth exploring as are magnificent Saltram House and Coleton Fishacre (both N.T.), whilst the myriad attractions of Plymouth offer a good day out. Miles of scenic coastal and estuary footpaths and cycle trails beckon, and children will also enjoy Sorley Tunnel, Woodlands Adventure Park and Pennywell Farm. Holbeton itself is an award winning village boasting a shop/P.O., a pub serving food and a children’s playground.
