Our featured holiday cottages in Scotland include this property overlooking the Kyle of Sutherland - a beautiful river estuary flowing into the Dornoch Firth and separating Sutherland from Ross-shire. A few miles away are the pretty, rather than spectacular, Falls of Shin, an excellent place to watch salmon battling upstream on their way to their spawning grounds (best seen June to September). This attractive conversion of a former steading, with its lovely courtyard entrance and sweeping views across the Kyles of Sutherland, offers an ideal base from which to explore an area that is both beautiful and off the beaten track. Warm and comfortably furnished, it adjoins another cottage only 2 miles from the famous Falls of Shin where salmon can be seen leaping and Harrods of the North have a shop and restaurant serving the delicious local produce. All around, dramatic mountain scenery affords glorious hill and forest walking, and the fishing is superb. The coastline offers wonderful opportunities for bird watching and Dornoch (15 miles) boasts great beaches, a 13th century cathedral and a championship golf course, whilst a little further up the coast, Dunrobin Castle is also well worth a visit (25 miles). Shops in Bonar Bridge 6 miles, pub serving food 2.5 miles.
