The town has a dramatic location - where the River Nidd cuts through a gorge with a large railway bridge across it . The best views are from the castle positioned high on a cliff overlooking the river. A collection of colourful characters associated with Knaresborough lend individuality to the town including Mother Shipton, a renowned 15th-century soothsayer. The Cave, her legendary birthplace, is near to the famous, unique, geological phenomenon - The Petrifying Well, which has such a high natural mineral content in its water that objects hanging underneath it will gradually turn to stone. It is reputed to be England's oldest visitor attraction, first opening its gates in 1630!
