On the banks of the fast flowing River Swale this bustling market town has maintained its wonderful charm and character. The town has grown around the impressive Norman castle which guards the entrance to Swaledale. The Georgian era was one of great prosperity for the town, when many fine buildings were erected around the cobbled market place, said to be one of the largest in England, with the parish church rising from its centre.
