If you are staying at any of our Yorkshire Dales cottages I recommend a trip to Brimham Rocks, one of the finest natural tourist attractions in the Dales, just a few miles from Woodpeckers. Scattered over some 50 acres on Brimham Moor overlooking Nidderdale, they are a series of fantastically shaped Millstone Grit outcrops, sculpted by erosion during the last Ice Age. The rocks are wildly popular with kids, probably because the shapes fire their imagination. Many of the weird shapes suggest all manner of things, including elephants, hippos, bears, mushrooms and some are said to have associations with druids, Mother Shipton and even the Devil himself!
A lovely beamed property, Woodpeckers (shown centre of left photograph) sits in a sweetly picturesque village just 4 miles from Fountains Abbey (N.T.). Its interior is beautifully furnished in traditional style and visitors are assured a warm welcome from the neighbouring owners. The village has little through traffic but boasts two pubs serving food, a fish shop, general store and a butcher all within 500 yards. Masham's real ale breweries, Ripon and its famous cathedral and Pateley Bridge are all about 6 miles whilst the Yorkshire Dales of Upper Wharfdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale are all within easy driving distance. York's wonderful array of historic and cultural attractions are 30 miles distant. Riding is available in the village.
