As one of the ideal destinations for a short break staying in holiday cottages Yorkshire ranks high. I spent most of my childhood summers in a village in the Yorkshire Wolds not far from North Dalton Manor. My memories of the area came back when visiting an exhibition by David Hockney of scenes across the Wolds, including some around the village of my childhood summers. He has spoken of the "hot, living" quality of this "very beautiful Yorkshire landscape, a very preserved corner of England that has hardly changed in 50 years ... The ground is extremely fertile, so one does not find anything for tourists - no teashops, just beautiful, undulating hills." While there are a few tea shops as well as some excellent pubs, the beauty and authenticity of the place remains.
Pleasantly situated overlooking the duck pond in the pretty ‘wolds’ village of North Dalton, these attractive, comfortably furnished Georgian cottages provide an ideal base for exploring the area. Together with one other cottage, they enjoy shared use of an outdoor swimming pool, hard tennis court and a walled orchard garden. Walkers will enjoy the local footpaths including the ‘Minster Way’ and ‘Wolds Way’ and dogs are allowed to exercise on designated farm fields. The duck pond opposite the cottages supports a variety of wild life and the surrounding area is home to a wealth of scenic and historic places of interest.|The great houses of Sledmere and Burton Agnes are both within 10 miles as is the watersports centre at Brandesburton. Castle Howard, the magnificent setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited and Goathland the setting for the TV series Heartbeat are within 1 hour’s drive. The Deep, in Hull, Eden Camp, Flamingo Land, Pickering with the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, Bridlington’s sandy bay, RSPB Bempton Cliffs and the historic city of York with excellent shopping, medieval architecture, railway museum and the fascinating Jorvik Museum are all about 20 miles. Touring the unspoilt Yorkshire Wolds by car is a pleasure in itself. Golf 7 miles. Shop 3 miles. Pub within walking distance.
