On the cliff tops high above these two neighbouring Whitby cottages stand the imposing remains of Whitby Abbey. Nearby the famous 199 steps (it's a tradition to count them) lead up to the parish church of St Mary, whose churchyard inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula, and onto the abbey. Founded in 657 by St Hilda, Whitby Abbey has over the years been a bustling settlement, a kings' burial place, the setting for a historic meeting between Celtic and Roman clerics and the home of saints including the poet Caedmon. Here high on the cliff top, there are superb views down over the old town's maze of narrow streets and busy quayside as well as across the valley to the famous Whale Jawbone commemorating the whaling history of the town.

Enjoying an unrivalled position and stunning views over the sea, harbour entrance and beach, these award winning cottages lie at the very eastern edge of Whitby yet only a 300 yard walk down cobbled streets to the harbour bridge. Sensitively rebuilt from a former old smoke house they offer well designed spacious interiors, double glazing and cosy heating. An ideal location whatever the season – in summer, for the safe beach just 100 yards from the door, and in winter, for the exhilarating drama of crashing waves and spectacular views. A traditional fishing town with a maritime heritage, Whitby boasts the Captain Cook Museum, craft and antique shops, galleries, jewellers selling the famous Whitby Jet, tea rooms, gourmet fish restaurants, pubs galore and a host of other attractions.
